StandardFood Managers certifications are required for most facilities which prepare and serve food (including most restaurants, bars, cafeterias, food trucks, bakeries, and food stands). Which one you get will depend on what kind of work you do.

There are two types of food managers certifications STANDARD and LIMITED.

The NVCFM ID card will continue to be recognized as a valid substitute for a paper exam certificate/photo ID. Certified Food Protection Managers will still need to take and pass the Food Manager’s Exam, and may need to present the certificate from that exam to Health Inspectors, and may also be required to present a photo ID. All food-service establishments are still required to have a Certified Food Safety / Food Protection Manager in “immediate control” during all operating hours. Prior to July 31, 2021, the NVCFM ID card was required in all establishments after that date it is no longer legally required, but will still be accepted. It is recognized by Health Departments in Fairfax County, Arlington County, City of Alexandria, and other entities. The Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Photo ID Card (also known as the Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager Certificate) is a photo ID issued by ORS Interactive which certifies that the holder has taken and passed a recognized Food Protection Manager’s Exam.
